There are many techniques to metal detecting. Enthusiasts have their own tips and tricks to share with beginners to the hobby. Here are some basic guidelines when using metal detector coils:

~Keep the search coil at a constant height. It must be parallel to the ground to do away with false signals ~Maintain the coil as close to the ground as possible ~Avoid swinging the coil like a pendulum or arching it upward at the end of a sweep because you will lose depth at that point ~Overlap your sweeps by advancing the search coil as much as 25% of the coil’s diameter ~Sweep the ground slowly and methodically. Do not rush to cover an acre in the space of 10 minutes! ~Avoid banging the search coil against hard objects like big rocks, walls and tree roots.
